Whether you’re a seasoned rider or planning your first tour, having the right gear and planning can make all the difference. A long-distance trip, or tour, on your motorcycle is probably one of the highlights of being a bike owner, but no matter how used to riding you are - proper preparation is crucial for a smooth and safe journey.
Required Documents
- Valid Passport: For all travellers.
- Vehicle Registration Document (V5C): Proof of ownership for your motorcycle.
- Driving Licence: Valid for the class of motorcycle you are riding.
- Motorcycle Insurance Certificate: Ensure it covers European travel.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): Old style paper licences may require an IDP depending on the countries you are travelling through. New style plastic photo cards are adequate on their own.

- Lights and Indicators: Ensure all are working correctly.
- Brakes: Test front and rear brakes.
- Fluid Levels: Check oil, coolant, and brake fluid.
- Fuel: Ensure you have enough fuel for your journey to the terminal and across.
- Battery: Ensure your battery is functioning properly and can handle a few stop/starts.
Essential Kit
- High-Visibility Vest: One needed for each person, it must be easily accessible in the event of a breakdown, mandatory in France and other counties within Europe.
- Reflective Stickers: For your helmet, if required in the countries you are visiting (e.g., France).
- UK Sticker/Number Plate: If your number plate does not have the UK identifier, a sticker will suffice.
